Brushes – Beginner Concepts

The point of these videos is to clearly and quickly go through all the essential concepts (as I see them) relating to playing the brushes on drumset.

Uses are far and wide, obviously including jazz styles but rock and others too.

00:05 – basic movements – creating a pulse or no pulse with sweeps
01:15 – volume with pushing brushes into the head
02:45 – simple brush pattern (slow/medium) (jazz/rock)
03:20 – standard brush pattern (jazz)
04:01 – shuffle pattern
04:15 – always be sweeping (create a constant sound)
05:06 – right hand sweeping pattern/shape
06:10 – right hand sweeping shuffle
06:55 – a jazz sweeping pattern
07:59 – uptempo jazz pattern
08:50 – ballad pattern
09:38 – sweeping shuffle pattern

 

 

00:00 – basic jazz fill (ruff/drag into beat 1 and/or 3)
00:50 – same fill into beat 2 and/or 4
01:39 – jazz comping
03:01 – feet patterns to accompany brushes (hi hat / bass drum)
03:20 – volume levels for feet in jazz
04:01 – left hand comping (jazz) send part of a triplet
04:55 – playing triplets with brushes (example)
05:33 – quarter note triplets sweeping rhythms (example)
06:34 – the other quarter note triplet rhythm
07:48 – the figure 8 pattern – ballad tempo
08:07 – alternative ballad pattern
